Welcome
It is the mission of the small learning communities of Thurgood Marshall High
School to prepare students to become active, functioning citizens by providing them with knowledge
and skills in academics and humanities.
Vision: We believe that our schools exist to help young people become the best
they can be and to achieve the highest levels of excellence in their efforts. We are committed to
assuring all students become autonomous, self actualized individuals. We are dedicated to assuring
all students develop skills to serve as leaders in many places and at many times during their
lives. We are committed to preparing students to live and work together in our communities and to
prepare them for life in a global society. We are committed to helping them become self disciplined
by developing personal responsibility, discernment, learning skills. Because students learn best
when they are engaged in their own learning, we will begin to develop this leadership and self
discipline by actively involving students in their own learning. We know that students learn best
when the school, parents, students and the community collectively participate in achieving academic
excellence and, therefore, we will welcome the participation of families and the community as
partners in the education of our young people.
To accomplish this vision we have created three smaller learning communities
that will thrive inside Thurgood Marshall High School. The themes are the
Academic Magnet Academy, School of Humanities and
Cultural Studies, School of Service and Leadership.
Students select either the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies or Service
and Leadership as ninth graders. The incoming freshmen apply for the admission into the AMA and are
accepted based upon meeting the program’s entrance requirements. We are convinced of the value and
viability of the small schools model. We are sure that each small school will be designed to
prepare students for entrance into a colleges and universities of higher learning and lead them to
become life long learners, active participants in their society and individuals who can provide a
livelihood for themselves. Each school will be semi-autonomous and a school of choice, this will
allow for the development of a rigorous and relevant curriculum that is not only aligned to the
State of Ohio standards, but that will also enable our students to compete in a global society once
completed.
Thurgood Marshall will continue to offer arts program for all students who
desire to have these courses. The Arts program offered are Creative Writing, Music, Dance, Theatre,
and Visual Arts. Students in the arts program are provided instruction through one-on-one contact
with many of our community’s leading professional and performing artists and arts educators.
Thurgood Marshall has an active parent and community organization- Community
Education Council (CEC). They meet every first Monday of the month (except July and August) at 6:00
PM.
