5 Fast Facts about the DPS Attendance Campaign

catapultNews

The Be Present for a Better Future attendance campaign implemented in August is already showing positive results for the Dayton Public Schools.

Through efforts such as offering incentives to students who have good attendance and regularly informing staff, students and parents about the importance of daily attendance, our schools have shown improvement in the percentage of students who are on track this school year.

Being on track means a student is not chronically absent. At this point in the school year, that means students have missed five or fewer days.

Below are important updates and highlights from the DPS attendance campaign.

  1. More students are “on track”
    • Horace Mann Elementary has shown the largest improvement in students who are considered on track compared to this time last year, an increase of 5.88%.
    • Belmont High School has shown the second-largest improvement, with an increase of 4.71%.
  2. The elementary, middle and high schools with the highest attendance rate for the first quarter include:
    • River’s Edge Montessori (96.01%)
    • Wright Brothers Middle School (90.91%)
    • Stivers School for the Arts (95.91%)
  3. “Be Present Days” are increasing the number of students in school on days with historically low attendance
    • The district is implementing “Be Present Days” on days with historically low attendance, such as holidays that students do not have off and the days before and after breaks.
    • The first Be Present Day was Columbus Day, Monday, October 14. More communication than usual was shared to remind students and parents that school was in session on Columbus Day via robocalls, social media posts and announcements made at the school level. One lucky student even received a gift basket with movie ticket vouchers, popcorn and candy for being in school on time that day.
    • Data shows attendance on Columbus Day increased by 2.5% compared to last year
  4. The district calendar now reaches more families
    • The DPS district calendar is now available in eight languages, including English, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Tigrinya and Turkish. The calendar includes important dates such as student breaks, holidays and parent-teacher conferences. Each student was also given a monthly DPS calendar to keep at home at the beginning of the school year.
  5. Individual schools are rewarding students for excellent attendance
    • All of our schools are rewarding students for good and improved attendance. Many schools had pizza parties or passed out popsicles at lunch this month to celebrate reaching a 95% attendance rate in September.
