New logo for Ponitz Career Technology Center
When the David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center opens in 2009, the school will have a new mascot – the golden panther – as well as a new logo to inspire school pride. At the March 18 school board meeting, DPS Director of Career Technical and Adult Education Linnae Clinton displayed the new logo: A golden-colored panther perched on a mountain ledge, with the words “Golden Panthers” in a circle around it and “Ponitz Career Technology Center” underneath. The logo was created by Mark Abraham, owner of Braman Design, Inc. Abraham collaborated with 17 sophomore and junior graphic design students at Patterson Career Center on the new design. He spent several class sessions teaching the students about the design process, discussing various famous logos and their individual strengths and weaknesses. They discussed how the logo would be used (letterhead, uniforms and for academic purposes), and how those uses would shape its development. After creating three different types of logos – caricature, illustration and icon – Abraham presented the options to the class and received feedback from students. “They had some genuine constructive criticisms that were minor tweaks,” he said. The majority of students – along with graphic design teacher Tonya Robinson – selected the illustrated version. “Everyone felt it would emulate the most school spirit,” Abraham said, noting the logo tells a story. “The panther … is on top of a mountain. It’s conquered its goals and is surveying its territory. It’s in a place of favor. “I thought this would be a challenge, and it was something that interested me, so I was really willing to carve out the time to (work with the class),” Abraham said. -30-"
