SPAVA! Festival opens next week at Stivers
The arts are alive and thriving as Stivers School for the Arts prepares to host a second annual celebration of the arts.
The Stivers Performing and Visual Arts (SPAVA!) Festival will run from April 30 to May 3 at the school, 1313 E. Fifth St., with an exciting daily mix of activities and performances by students as well as local and national artists. The festival will kick off on with a performance by the Stivers Philharmonia orchestra at 8 p.m. on April 30. On May 1, students will participate in several in-school workshops on caricature, piano and handbells.
Other events include:
“Soup Dressed Up” - The ninth annual event - held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 1 - features a choice of handmade ceramic bowl with soup, bread, dessert and drink for a $10 donation.
Little Shop of Horrors - The Stivers Theatre Department presents the school’s annual spring musical. Performances are 8 p.m. on May 1 and 2; tickets are $8 for students, $10 for adults, and may be purchased by contacting festival director Cissy Matthews at 542-7427.
DPS All-City Elementary Concert - Student musicians from around the district will perform in a free public concert, at 11 a.m. on May 2 in the school gymnasium.
Yellow Springs Tale Spinners - Enjoy an afternoon of storytelling, tall tales, myths and legends by this creative local group, performing at 1 p.m. on May 2 in the library.
Edna Hibel exhibit and video - The world-renowned American lithographer and watercolorist will be featured from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 2 in Room 1202.
