Welcome to Ruskin PK-8, Home of the Rams!

Ruskin is a neighborhood school educating children in grades PK through 8. Our community partner is the East End Community Center.  This partnership supports the academic curriculum during the school day in a multitude of ways.  East End also has programs after-school with Miracle Makers for students and on Saturdays with Taking Off to Success (TOTS) for parents.  Ruskin is a place is that always in a motion with activities to support students and the community.

Our mission, in partnership with parents and the community, is to raise up and send forth self-advocating, service oriented, global citizens, who through meaningful commitments will change the world one relationship at a time.

We are preparing students to take their place as leaders and citizens in a rapidly changing world. Therefore, every student matters. We encourage each student to expand his or her skills and develop the confidence to think, write, and debate his or her point of view. We want students to get involved in school activities and give back to the community in which they live.

A primary focus has been on teaching and learning with an emphasis in the areas of kindergarten readiness, third graders reading on grade level, closing the achievement gap, and preparing students for college and careers. We have also added the Dual-Language Immersion Program in grades K-3rd.  The goals of the dual immersion program are to develop bilingualism/biliteracy, academic achievement, and cross-cultural competencies for all students.

Parents and guardians are vital to the educational success of our children. We believe that each student is capable of taking responsibility for their own learning, but family support is critical.  Parents and guardians can assist their children by ensuring that they come to school on time each day, establish nightly homework time, and support school activities. The Home Access Center provides access to parents and guardians, so that they can review their child’s grades from home.  All parents and guardians are invited to join the Community Education Council (CEC), which meets each month.  There are also monthly family nights and programs that are both educational and fun for everyone.

The Ruskin faculty and staff are committed to offering the best educational opportunities for every student.  Each year, they attend numerous professional development opportunities and are capable of implementing effective teaching strategies, the common core curriculum, and both formative and summative assessments in the classroom.  Our goal is to ensure that each student is ready for the next part of his or her educational career.

Ruskin is a Positive School Climate School, which encourages and teaches students to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe (The Three B’s). We also practice Restorative Discipline, which seeks to bring students full circle with their actions; in ways that repair relationships that violate of one of the Three Be’s, guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook or the Dayton Public School’s Student Code of Conduct.

We are anticipating an exciting and productive school year and invite you to join us and be an important component of the Ruskin community partnership.  Together, we can provide a rich school experience for each and every student.
