The Superintendent’s Student Senate, comprised of student leaders from each of the district’s high schools, is working for the fourth consecutive year to offer encouragement and assistance to “silent leaders” in their midst who are planning to attend college. With an annual goal of $3,000, they have provided two $250 scholarships to each of the six DPS high schools, for students in the classes of 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Eligible applicants for the 2015 Superintendent’s Student Senate Scholarship must be a graduating senior at a DPS high school, have a grade point average between 2.5 and 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale), be accepted as a full-time student at an accredited college or university, and write an essay on “What makes you an effective silent leader?”

“We have many silent leaders,” Superintendent Lori L. Ward said. “They are students who may not carry the highest GPA or hold class offices, but might volunteer in the community, serve in their church or mentor other young people.”

Student Senate members are working, with support from The Dayton Foundation and DPS, to create a sustainable scholarship and are conducting a fund-raising campaign through the remainder of this school year.

DPS high school seniors can pick up applications at their schools. Those wishing to donate to the fund can mail their contributions to the following address: The Dayton Foundation, Attn: Superintendent’s Student Senate Scholarship, 500 Kettering Tower, Dayton, OH 45423.

The Superintendent’s Student Senate meets regularly to share concerns, recommendations and interests with Superintendent Ward and to initiate student-oriented programs.
