John Rogers, III to manage newly created DPS department

The Dayton Board of Education announced the appointment of John Rogers, III as the district’s new coordinator of the Office for Males of Color during the June 21 board meeting. Rogers brings to the district his experience in developing culturally enriched curricula to help students both academically and in their daily lives.
Rogers comes to Dayton Public Schools from Wright State University, where he held several posts since 1998. He most recently served as senior early college outreach specialist. In that role, he provided direction for students as they transitioned to college. He developed college readiness and cultural enrichment curricula to improve students’ academic scores and life skills such as self-esteem and self-appraisal. In addition, Rogers developed and executed intervention programs to provide disadvantaged students the opportunity to succeed.
In addition to his academic experience, Rogers is committed to community service having participated in many initiatives including the Dayton African American Leadership Program and Upward Bound. He is also a recipient of the Malcolm X Man of Perseverance Award at Wright State as well as being named an outstanding faculty member in 2014.
Rogers will step into the role of coordinator in the Office for Males of Color at DPS. The newly created department was established in March and begins in the 2016-17 school year. It will address academic and social factors to raise graduation and achievement rates.
The office has five initial goals: reduce disparities in suspensions among males of color, increase the graduation rate over a four-year period, reduce the percentage of chronic absenteeism, increase the number of students taking advanced coursework, and reduce the number of expulsions.
Rogers has a master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Wright State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation services. Rogers begins his tenure with Dayton Public Schools July 1.
