Four teams place in Stock Market Game; will present at Dayton City Commission

Several sixth graders at the Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy are masters of the stock market. Their knowledge of Wall Street led them to high standings in the Ohio Stock Market Game.
Four teams from Gregory Powell’s sixth-grade classes ranked among the highest in the state during the eight-week math and economics challenge. The teams consistently rallied in the top 10 during the competition. Their final rankings were 15, 18, 19, and 48 out of 130 middle schools in the state. The top three DPS teams turned a profit of 12 to 15 percent during the eight-week run.
The Stock Market Game is a project-based activity that meets Ohio academic standards. The students monitor stocks, analyze market trends and make stock purchases based on their findings. They have $100,000 in virtual cash to manage. They buy and sell real-world stocks in a virtual, classroom money market. Local stocks Key Corp. and Cincinnati Bell did the best for Mr. Powell’s students.
“To see these kids collaborating in the classroom and researching their business plan is energizing,” Powell said. “It gives them real world experience in the stock market while helping them learn about math, stocks, bonds, mutual funds and investing.”
A select team will present their findings to the Dayton City Commission Wednesday, May 18, at 6 p.m. The students presented their project at Wright State University’s National Professional Development Conference earlier this month. For more information about the Stock Market Challenge, contact Mr. Gregory Powell at 542-5300.
