Judith Spurlock to lead hiring of highly qualified personnel

Dayton Public Schools named Judith Spurlock executive director of human resources, effective  Jan. 13, 2016, at the Dayton Board of Education’s organizational meeting Tuesday.

Spurlock’s extensive leadership and experience within the district will help guide department strategies in the hiring of teachers and non-teaching staff, as well as staff training and advancement.

She is already a member of the DPS team, having most recently served as principal of Ruskin PreK-8 School, where she implemented innovative strategies to track vacancies and opportunities for teacher advancement. She also served as an administrative representative during 2015 clerical negotiations with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees. Spurlock’s rise within the district includes her positions as an international baccalaureate teacher at Meadowdale High School and as assistant principal at several schools since coming to DPS in 1997. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Wright State University.

Spurlock is already working to move the district forward in its efforts to recruit and hire highly-trained teachers and staff, as well as support the district’s academic plan through staff retention and facilitation of professional development.

Dayton Public Schools employs about 2,500 people and serves approximately 14,000 students. Human resources plays a vital role in the district’s efforts to provide students a high-quality education that prepares them for college and careers. The department will work to become the employer of choice for highly qualified teachers and staff.

Spurlock succeeds Lisa Lewis, who left the district in November to accept a position in Washington, D.C.
