Award recognizes A grade in value added on state report card

The Ohio Department of Education has recognized the success of three DPS schools with a 2016 Momentum Award. Belle Haven, Edison and Kemp schools have been honored for earning a letter grade of A in all value-added areas, placing them among only 169 schools statewide to achieve this distinction.
While Belle Haven, Edison and Kemp earned straight As in value-added, Charity Adams Earley Girls Academy, Dayton Boys Prep Academy, Eastmont, River’s Edge and Meadowdale Elementary, earned all As or Bs in value-added.
“Earning an A or B speaks volumes about the work our staff and students are doing to ensure that all children are growing based on their past performances,” Shelia Burton, Ph.D., associate superintendent, student services, said.
The district’s A in value-added on the 2016 report card was a game changer for the district, removing Dayton Public Schools from the threat of state takeover and the oversight of the Academic Distress Commission to pursue a new path toward continued improvement.
In addition to the district’s five-star, top-rated preschools; one-to-one technology initiative; and the new Office for Males of Color, the district has implemented new teaching strategies, including intervention programs during and after school. As DPS works to improve, the focus remains on literacy and math, keeping students on track for graduation, new initiatives to improve student attendance, and closing achievement gaps.
