The Dayton Public School District is partnering with Five Rivers Health Centers to open a school-based health care facility for students and the community. The announcement came Friday, April 12 at a press conference held at Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy. 

World of Wonder PreK-6 school and Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy will become the new Roosevelt Elementary PreK-6. The new health center will open at Roosevelt in August 2019. 

“The district began studying school-based health initiatives in the fall of 2018. Board member Mohamed Al-Hamdani spearheaded the creation of a team of health care providers who came to the table to explore partnerships,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli. “The result was a partnership with Five Rivers Health Centers and DPS. Today, we are here to announce that partnership.”

Students will be eligible for health care services regardless of health insurance or ability to pay. Students who do not attend Roosevelt will be provided transportation during the school day to the health center if needed. The facility is part of the district’s strategic plan.  

“It is clear that for many students, lack of access to health care is an impediment to their ability to learn in the classroom,” said Board of Education Vice President Jocelyn Spencer Rhynard. “The reality is that when it comes to health, your zip code matters more than your genetic code. By offering a school-based health care center, we can mitigate the illnesses and health issues that lead to chronic absenteeism and prevent a child from getting a quality education.”

Five Rivers Health Centers is federally qualified and has been providing services to the community for nearly eight years.

“Our mission is to provide access to affordable, high-quality health care to the residents of our counties. We are truly excited about this opportunity to work with DPS to increase the reach of our primary care services,” said Chief Medical Officer of Five Rivers Health Centers Dr. Mamle Anim. “The facility will have three medical exam rooms, 3-4 dental chairs, a vision suite and also behavioral health services. This facility will provide services to students, faculty and the community at large.”
