For Immediate Release

Students in grades K-12 start school Aug. 16

Discover what’s new at Dayton Public Schools at the annual Back to School Rally Sunday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Ponitz Career Technology Center, 741 Washington St.

Parents and students will receive all the information they need for the new school year in one location. Families can learn about the third grade guarantee, student registration, parent involvement opportunities, graduation requirements and much more. New opportunities this year include the district’s five-star preschools, access to online curricula, with Chromebooks for every student in grades three through eight; middle school programs that focus on the whole student; the new Office of Males of Color; and more. Free refreshments will be served, and there will be giveaways, including backpacks, for participating families.

Children will also have the opportunity to receive a free haircut thanks to our collaboration with the BJ Kids 91 Foundation. Parents must register their children for a haircut on Aug. 12 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Ponitz CTC. Community partners who help DPS make the event a success are the BJ Kids 91 Foundation, CareSource, Dayton Dragons, Levin Family Foundation and Office Depot. BJ Kids 91 program partners are DPS, Premier Health, Crayons to Classrooms, House of Bread, Coca-Cola, Agape for Youth, Inc., NFL, Indianapolis Colts, NCNW, and Buckeye Health Plan.

The first day of school for students in grades K-12 is Aug. 16.

For more information, contact Toni Perry Gillispie, director of family and community engagement, at (937) 542-3013.
