This week we are spotlighting Lorena Rice, a school nurse at Ruskin Elementary!

Ms. Rice has been in her current role for nine years. Her day-to-day responsibilities include caring for students with medical needs, assessing students who become ill or injured at school, COVID-19 contact tracing and quarantine monitoring, ETR evaluations, immunization documentation, and monitoring, along with vision, hearing, and dental screenings, among many other things.

“I have the best job in America,” Ms. Rice said. “I get to help children through injuries and illness and get to watch them grow emotionally, academically, and physically. Most of them are taller than I am by the fourth grade and they let me know it!”

Ms. Rice said the best part about working for the Dayton Public School District and Ruskin Elementary is the diversity of students and staff.

She added that she has spent 33 years working in Public Health and Prenatal and Community Health Centers in the Miami Valley. She said the many skills she has learned in these areas help make her a better DPS nurse.

Her nominator said she is an excellent nurse and has a great relationship with the staff, students, and families at Ruskin. In addition, she is a team player and does everything she can to keep students and staff healthy.

Thank you for all you do to help students!
