Schools compete at Belmont High School

DPS students in grades four through eight will match wits at the annual Math-O-Lympics from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Belmont High School, 2615 Wayne Ave. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:45 a.m. with an Olympics-style parade of competitors, followed by the competitions.

Three key competitions will be featured: the ever-popular Battle of the Brains, the brain wrenching Team Challenge, and Design Challenge.

  • Battle of the Brains (grades 4-6) This is a fast-paced, quick recall competition, and this year all student responses will count, not just the fastest on the buzzer.
  • Team Challenge (grades 4-8) Teams will work collaboratively on a paper and pencil test to answer brain popping math questions.
  • Design Challenge (grades 7-8) This is a STEM-based performance task fashioned after the Next Generation Assessments. Students will gather and analyze information to solve a real-life problem using technology.  The design challenge tests skills students will need to take the new state assessments this year.

During the competitions, families can take advantage of parent resource sessions that offer information on Ohio’s new learning standards and assessments.

The event is free and open to the public.
