Disruptions from players or spectators will result in empty bleachers
Dayton Public Schools is focused on ensuring that every high school basketball game brings out the best in high school athletes and is enjoyed by fans. As the new season begins, more school administrators and security personnel will be visible at every city league game, and Dayton police officers will be present at every dismissal. In the event that an altercation occurs between anyone on the court, in the stands or at dismissal, the next city league game will be played with the teams, officials and coaches only. No spectators will be admitted.
“We appreciate our fans who come out to cheer for our student athletes and look forward to a great season of high school basketball,” David Lawrence, chief of school innovation, said. “Because community support is important to our teams, we are taking some bold steps to send a message to those who would attend our games for reasons other than supporting our players.”
School officials, principals and coaches are communicating the new protocol to parents, players and community members as they look forward to city league contests free from the disruptions and outside influences that marred several games toward the end of the 2014-15 season, resulting in a decision to play remaining games on Sundays.
With preventive measures in place and consequences for disruption agreed upon by all DPS high schools, the teams are ready to hit the hardwood.
Parents may call the DPS Office of Teaching and Learning at 542-3257 or the district athletic director at 542-4070 with any questions.
