Dayton Public Schools welcomes several new principals to the district for the 2016-17 school year. Each has the educational background and leadership skills to guide their staff and students to academic success.

Jacquelyn Pope, PhD., is the new principal at Meadowdale High School. She started her career with DPS as a kindergarten teacher in 1999 and later became assistant principal at Ponitz CTC. She left the district in 2012 to work at the Columbus City Schools, but was more than ready to return home.

“I just really wanted to return to Dayton Public Schools to work with the kids here,” said Principal Pope.

Karl Perkins comes to the district, having served most recently as principal and chief academic officer at the DPS-supported Dayton Business Technology High School. His extensive educational experience will help lead students and staff at the newly reconfigured Wogaman Middle School. The new middle school model is designed to bolster academic achievement and attendance among students in grades seven and eight. (Edwin Joel Brown and Wright Brothers, also opening as middle schools this year, will continue to be led by Channey Goode and Shawna Welch, respectively.)

Joy Stokes is the new principal at Belle Haven PreK-6 School. She was assistant principal at River’s Edge Montessori PreK-6 School last year, and Jennifer Dearwester becomes the new principal at Ruskin PreK-6 School, having served as interim principal last year.

Several schools also have new assistant principals this year. They are: Daniel Gibson, Eastmont; Tasha Millerton, Wogaman; Vanisa Turney, Edison; Stacey Williams, World of Wonder; Myra Baker, Kiser; Maya Dorsey, Edwin Joel Brown; Timothy McKinney, River’s Edge; Jessica Reese, Ruskin; and Caitlin Smith, Fairview.

The school year begins for kindergarten through grade 12 on Aug. 16.
