Dayton Public Schools will observe the second annual Men of Color event, beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. The day brings African American male role models together with African American male students for candid discussions about personal journeys, the importance of education, and overcoming barriers to success.

More than 150 local leaders have been invited to share their stories and spend time with students of all ages. A reception will be held in their honor at 3 p.m. in the RTA Cultural Center, 40 S. Edwin Moses Blvd.

The Men of Color Initiative, co-chaired by DPS Chief of School Innovations David Lawrence and Dayton City Commissioner Jeffrey J. Mims Jr., is an arm of My Brother’s Keeper, a White House initiative. The program challenges communities to reach out to young people to help them make better choices and work toward a fulfilling future. A 2014 report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers acknowledges barriers that disadvantaged youth face, particularly young men of color, including educational disparities, and the resulting economic impact.
