Dayton high school for the arts once again among best in America

Stivers School for the Arts once again ranks among America’s best public high schools, in both Ohio and the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report in a study released this week.

Stivers earned a silver medal, ranking 66th statewide (out of 155 high schools ranked), and 1,535 nationally (out of 2,673 ranked). Stivers also moved up in this year’s state ranking from 73rd in last year’s ranking.

Principal Erin Dooley is proud of her school’s repeat performance in earning national accolades.

“Stivers is thrilled to have moved up in the rankings in the silver medal category,” Dooley said.

“We are beginning to see the results of our writing initiative that has been implemented across every classroom by every teacher. Both the art and academic teachers have worked tirelessly to move our school to the next level. They, along with their students and families, should be very proud of this accomplishment.”

This is the seventh year the study has been conducted and the sixth year Stivers has been recognized. The arts high school also earned a bronze medal in 2009 and silver medals in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015.

Stivers is among the top three highest state rankings for schools in Montgomery County.

Dayton Early College Academy, a Dayton Public Schools-sponsored charter school, was awarded a bronze medal for the second consecutive year.

Criteria used to judge schools include the degree to which they serve all students across different ability levels, academic performance as measured by state achievement tests, and college preparedness as measured through Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses.

The report was produced by U.S. News & World Report in collaboration with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research (AIR), which implemented the rankings methodology.
