  • Ponitz CTC holds eighthgrade open house

​​Ponitz Career Technology Center is looking for a few good students. The school is inviting eighth-graders and their parents to attend an open house at 741 Washington St., from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. Students will have the opportunity to tour the career pathways offered at Ponitz and meet with instructors and potential classmates. The application deadline to attend Ponitz in the fall is Friday, March 4. About 800 students in grades nine through 12 are enrolled at Ponitz each year. Most are career-ready upon graduation.   • Sinclair to host college fair for DPS students

Graduation is just months away and Sinclair Community College wants DPS students to consider furthering their education at Sinclair. Ponitz CTC students will be the first to attend the Sinclair/Ponitz College Fair on Wednesday, March 2. They will have the opportunity, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m., to explore Sinclair’s 220 academic programs and more than 40 student clubs and services. The fair will then be open to all DPS high school students and their families from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the College Credit Plus program, financial aid and scholarships.   • DPS and Ohio 8 looking for qualified teachers

​DPS is looking for highly-qualified teachers to join the district. The DPS recruitment campaign officially kicks off March 7 through April 15. The recruitment team is already committed to 10 job fairs in the months ahead, the first at the University of Dayton’s Education Interview Day on Monday, March 7, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the UD River Campus. Graduating UD education students will meet with DPS human resources representatives. For more information, contact Ida Nalls at 542-3535 or Dana Darling at 542-3268. The Ohio 8 Coalition is also holding its annual job fair for the eight largest Ohio urban school districts. The Ohio 8 Coalition Job Fair is set from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 at the Embassy Suites North in Columbus. On-site interviews will be available.   • DPS Preschool Fair gets young children ready to succeed

Setting children on a course for educational success begins with preschool. DPS is hosting a series of preschool fairs to make sure children have the opportunity to attend preschool free of charge in 2016-17. The first fair is set for Thursday, March 17 at Rosa Parks Early Learning Center located at 3705 Lori Sue Ave. Parents can take advantage of on-site registration, plus free physical and dental screenings. Each fair begins at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Other fair dates are:

  • March 21 at Cleveland PreK-6 School

  • March 22 at Kiser PreK-8 School

  • April 5 at Edison PreK-8 School

  • Ponitz engineering and math students get real-world experience

General Electric is taking Ponitz Career Technology Center engineering and math students under its wing. GE engineers will host them once a month at the GE Aviation EPISCenter at the University of Dayton during lunch-and-learn sessions. Engineering students have already toured the facility. The next step is a day of job shadowing on Friday, March 4. Math students will visit Wednesday, March 9. Summer internship opportunities are also available. The new partnership allows the students to put their classroom studies to work in a real-world setting. The EPISCenter is located at 111 River Park Drive.   • Stivers students let their voices be heard

Two students from Stivers School for the Arts are winners of the VFW “Voice of Democracy” competition. Maria Arias took the top prize locally and participated in the state competition. Her classmate, Shawn Gardner, was runner-up. They competed by writing and recording an audio essay with a patriotic theme. This year’s theme was “My Vision for America.” The VFW established the “Voice of Democracy” program in 1947 to provide high school students the opportunity to express themselves.
