  • December is season of districtwide holiday concerts

DPS students are celebrating the holidays. Schools across the district have holiday programs scheduled to celebrate the season. Here are just a few to choose from:

December 8, 9, 10 – Rosa Parks Early Learning Center winter concert, 3702 Lori Sue Ave. at 5:30 p.m. each day. Kindergarteners perform Dec. 8, PreK Orange Community performs Dec. 9 and the Purple Community performs Dec. 10. Call 542-4390 for more information.

December 11 – Stivers Celebrates at the Dayton Masonic Center, 525 West Riverview Ave. The annual program begins at 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $5 to $20. Purchase tickets at the high school’s magnet office. Call 542-7448 for more information.

December 15 – Westwood PreK-8 holiday program, 2805 Oakridge Drive at 5 p.m. Call 542-4990 for more information.

  • EJ Brown PreK-8 holiday program, 31 Willowwood Drive at 6:30 p.m. Call 542-5740 for more information.
  • Louise Troy PreK-4 winter program, 1630 Miami Chapel Rd. at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Call 542-4290 for more information.
  • Stivers choir to perform with pianist Jim Brickman

The Stivers School for the Arts Chamber Choir will perform with renowned pianist Jim Brickman when his Comfort & Joy Christmas Tour makes a stop at the Victoria Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The award-winning choir will collaborate on such songs as “Sending You a Little Christmas Song.” Stivers families and friends can receive special ticket prices.   • Title I parent involvement event to focus on math, literacy

The next Title I Parent Involvement Family Day is set for Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the DPS Community Room at 115 S. Ludlow Street. Parents will learn new ways to engage their children through math and literacy. There will be educational game demonstrations, and families will receive a free game to take home while supplies last. For more information, contact Anthony Newton, Title I parent involvement coordinator, at 542-3307.

  • Eye Teasers Family Day at Dayton Art Institute

Students from Cleveland PreK-6 and Valerie PreK-6 schools contributed to a new art installation to be debuted Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Dayton Art Institute. They worked with Cincinnati-based artist, Kate Kern, on a display called “Deep See,” an eye-teasing artwork compiled of individual students’ contributions to one huge installation. An opening reception will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the DAI Lange Family Experiencenter. Refreshments will be served and Dayton choreographer, Rodney Veal, will present a special dance performance. The event is free for all Cleveland and Valerie families.   • Student drawings selected for county conservation calendar

Four DPS students’ artwork was chosen to be part of the 2016 Montgomery County Environmental Calendar. The contest winners were selected from works submitted by students across the county. The theme for 2016 is “Be a Water Watcher” and “From Sea to Shining Sea – Keep America Litter Free.” The Dayton students chosen are Horace Mann PreK-8 School students Yancy Ivey, grade eight, and Kayleigh Hayward, grade four, and Dayton Boys Preparatory Academy students Skylar Vigay, grade two, and John Bernard, grade eight.
