  • DPS teacher to receive MAC grant

Wogaman 5-8 School teacher, Rachel Blanks, was awarded a Make Activities Count Grant. The MAC grant is sponsored by local McDonald’s restaurant owners and operators. The grant money will help provide students with hands-on activities to enrich their learning. MAC Grants Program Coordinator Suzanne Wehrly says Blanks’ application was among the “cream of the crop.” Blanks will receive the award during a special check presentation Monday, Nov. 9, 5:30 p.m., at the Ray & Joan Kroc Center on Keowee St.

  • Belmont High School part of Welcome Dayton community initiative

Belmont High School is collaborating with Sinclair Community College in a pilot program. Welcome Belmont pairs native-born students with immigrant students in the ESL program. Starting next year, the student pairs will become “cultural collaborators.” They will learn from one another and teach one another global citizenship and cross-cultural communication skills. Welcome Belmont is part of the Welcome Dayton campaign that works to expand local immigration services and allow all residents the opportunity to thrive in their community. For more information, contact Teresa Troyer at 542-3344.

  • Longfellow Academy students receive donated socks

Students at Longfellow Academy will soon have a cozy new pair of socks to wear, thanks to the Sock It To Me communitywide sock drive project. The school will receive 200 pairs of socks as a thank you for making its own donation to the So Loved project. Longfellow transition students will sort and distribute the socks as part of a community service project during the first two weeks of November. ’05 DPS graduate Ashley Browning is co-founder of the So Loved non-profit organization. For more information, contact Debra Howard at Longfellow Academy at 542-6910.
